The Fracture and Reliability Research Institute invites applications for a tenured position at the Full Professor level. Special preference will be given to those applicants who have a strong background and interest in the areas of mechanical engineering such as strength and fracture of solids, reliability of engineering components and structure, and energy materials. Research field for the position includes development of experimental and numerical methods for evaluating a materials aging and a long term reliability of the materials and components in energy conversion systems, which may cover those research areas such as mechanisms of fatigue damage, mechanisms and modeling of environmentally assisted cracking, failure prediction methodology, and risk assessment of energy conversion systems, which may have applications to nuclear and thermal power generation, and new energy systems.

The Fracture and Reliability Research Institute belongs to the Division of Mechanical Engineering, Tohoku University. The Division of Mechanical Engineering consists of the four departments (Systems Design Engineering, Nanomechanics, Aerospace Engineering, and Bioengineering and Robotics; see http://www.mech.tohoku.ac.jp) and is currently composed of 28 professors and 28 associate professors, pursuing research and teaching in areas such as Intelligent Designing, Energy System Engineering, Material Mechanics, Nano-Technology, Simulation Science, Space Technology, Biomechanics, Robotics and other fields newly created by fusion of different fields. Responsibilities will include teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, and directing research projects, which will lead to MS and Ph.D. theses.

The position is open to any candidate who fulfills the listed academic requirements, regardless of gender or nationality.
